Our latest split shipment from Italy just arrived via Mondo Imports. In it were three producers: Paolo Saracco, Le Vigne di Alice and Corte Sant Alda. All from the north and all big sellers for Mondo in Oz.
The cost of getting the wines here in pristine condition (14 degrees the whole way) with refrigerated trucks and a reefer container worked out at $1.67 per bottle. Compare this with unrefrigerated shipping at around $0.30 cents a bottle and it might seem substantial. However, considering where the wines have to come from, it is well worth the extra money.
Consider that this container has to travel over the equator, and have massive temperature variations (from sub zero temperatures to 40 degrees plus) it is simply not worth the risk in shipping without refrigeration.
